Although I initially had no intention of discussing this topic, I came across some social media posts promoting practices not aligned with the true essence of Islam. While loving Hazrat Hussain [RA] is an integral part of our iman , it is crucial to condemn the promotion of violence in the name of Islam . As followers of the teachings laid down by our beloved Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), we must respect and honour our martyrs in accordance with his guidelines.
It is essential to distinguish between genuine Islamic practices and mere personal desires falsely labeled as Islam. As a humble individual, nay , a big sinner, I am not a scholar, but I have read from Islamic books about how Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) profoundly honored his companions after they were martyred in the battlefields. Despite losing his uncle Hazret Hamzah [RA], his cousin Jaffar [RA], his daughter Zainab [RA], and 70 close companions [RA] on the day of Uhad, he did not establish an annual mourning tradition in the manner that some later Muslims have established over the martyrdom of Hazret Hussain [RA] .
Let us be cautious not to deviate from the true teachings of Islam, and instead, strive to follow the compassionate and merciful path exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and respect the memory of our martyrs in a manner consistent with his teachings.
Hazret Hussain, the revered grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), holds a cherished and significant place in Islamic history. Born in 626 CE, he was the son of Hazrat Ali ibn Abi Talib [RA] and Hazrat Fatimah [RA] , the beloved daughter of the Prophet (PBUH). The Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) had a special affection for Hazret Hussain [RA], often lovingly referring to him as one of the "leaders of the youth of paradise." This endearment reflects the high regard and love the Prophet (PBUH) had for his grandson.
As an influential figure in Islam, Hazret Hussain's legacy goes beyond his familial ties to the Prophet (PBUH). His character and actions embody the essence of a true Muslim. He fearlessly stood up for truth and justice, even when it meant opposing some deviated Muslims who were perpetuating injustice and straying from the true path of Islam. His unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and righteousness is an inspiration to Muslims worldwide.
The tragic events of Karbala in 680 CE serve as a testament to Hazret Hussain's dedication to the truth. Alongside his family members and a small group of loyal companions, he confronted the oppressive and unjust rule of the Umayyad caliph Yazid. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Hazret Hussain [RA] refused to compromise his principles and chose to make the ultimate sacrifice by attaining martyrdom. His martyrdom at the age of 54 is commemorated annually during the month of Muharram by Muslims around the world. However, some Muslims engage themselves in harmful and unislamic practices in the name of this commemoration.
It is essential to understand the true meaning and purpose behind the commemoration of Muharram. As Muslims, we believe that all martyrs, including Hazret Hussain [RA] and his family, are destined to enter Jannat ul Firdous, the highest level of paradise, due to their righteous deeds , unwavering faith and grand sacrifice. Thus, there is no need for excessive mourning or acts of self-torture during this time. Islam encourages us to remember and honour the sacrifices made by Hazret Hussain [RA] and his companions while also promoting unity, peace, and understanding among Muslims. There is no need to transgress the limits of mourning over martyrs set by the prophet of Islam (PBUH).
It is crucial to follow the teachings of Islam and the example set by the Prophet (PBUH), who discouraged mourning over martyrs or anyone else for more than three days. Engaging in rituals like striking one's face or chest, injuring oneself with knives and swords, walking on burning embers, or wearing black as a form of mourning are not sanctioned by Islam. Instead, we should focus on spreading the truth of Islam, promoting unity among Muslims, and praying for the guidance of those who may be following misguided practices out of the lack of knowledge of Islam.
As believers, let us honor the memory of Hazret Hussain [RA] by emulating his courage and unwavering commitment to justice and righteousness, rather than resorting to self-inflicted suffering during the month of Muharram. Let us strive to make positive contributions to society, support one another, and stand up for truth and justice in the face of adversity. By doing so, we can truly honour the legacy of Hazret Hussain [RA] and uphold the true teachings of Islam.
We must not do anything abominable in the name of Islam and thus invoke the wrath of Allah. Let's put our whims and desires on the shelf and learn and teach Islam as taught by Allah and His last messenger (PBUH).
