The Merciful Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] As A Match-maker of Hazrat Julaybib
Hazrat Julaybib (Ψ±ΨΆΩ Ψ§ΩΩΩ ΨΉΩΩ) was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad (ο·Ί). His name is not often mentioned but his life is deeply inspiring. His story shows the mercy of the Prophet, the equality taught by Islam and the truth that real value lies in faith and character, not in looks or social status.
Tribe and background:
The family background of Julaybib was unknown. There is no record of his parents or his tribe. In Arab society at that time, this was a serious disadvantage because tribes gave protection, respect and support. He was an Arab and lived among the Ansar of Madinah. Some reports say he may have come from a distant tribe and later settled in Madinah. Because he was poor, had no known lineage and looked different, people ignored him and mocked him. Even children made fun of him. Some people did not allow him to enter their homes.
Appearance:
The name Julaybib comes from the Arabic word jalbab and suggests a very short height. He was described as unattractive, black-skinned and physically deformed. Because of his appearance and his lonely life, marriage and normal social life seemed impossible for him in that society.
Marriage:
The Prophet Muhammad (ο·Ί) always cared for even the weakest members of the community. One day, he asked Julaybib if he wished to marry and Julaybib agreed. The Prophet (ο·Ί) then went to a respected man from the Ansar and asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage. At first, the man thought the proposal was for the Prophet (ο·Ί) himself and felt very happy. When he learned that it was for Julaybib, both parents were shocked and refused, especially the mother. Their daughter was known for her beauty, modesty, grace and good character.
When the daughter heard about the proposal, she showed strong faith. She said that if the Prophet (ο·Ί) had chosen this for her, she would accept it and trust Allah and His Messenger. The Prophet (ο·Ί) praised her faith and prayed for her. The marriage was arranged with help from other companions who provided gifts. Julaybib and his wife began their married life peacefully.
This marriage showed that Islam rejects judging people by wealth, family background or physical appearance.
Martyrdom:
Soon after his marriage, Julaybib joined the Prophet (ο·Ί) on a military expedition. During the battle (Badr probably), he fought bravely against the enemies of Islam.
After the battle, the Prophet (ο·Ί) asked about the companions and repeatedly said that Julaybib was missing. The companions searched and found him lying on the ground. Seven enemies lay dead around him. He had killed them before he himself was martyred.
The Prophet (ο·Ί) stood over his body and said two or three times, “He killed seven and then was killed. This man is of me and I am of him.”
The Prophet (ο·Ί) personally lifted Julaybib’s body, prepared his grave and buried him. As a martyr, he was not washed/bathed. Some narrations say that angels came down to take part in his burial.
Julaybib’s life changed from rejection and loneliness to honour, love and great respect. His story reminds us that in Islam, faith, sincerity and courage matter more than anything else in this world. May Allah be pleased with him.
Moral:
How many Muslims today are willing to follow the example of the Prophet (ο·Ί), Julaybib or Julaybib’s wife? We follow the devil and other enemies of Islam but claim to be true Muslims. True Islam exists only in books and true Muslims have entered graveyards. What we see around us are hypocrites, actors and imposters, not true Muslims.
